Stable, efficient, low-carbon heat from the ground

A ground source heat pump (GSHP) uses the steady temperature a metre or two below your garden to heat your home and hot water very efficiently, all year round. Because ground temperatures stay stable through winter, a well-designed GSHP can deliver strong seasonal efficiency even in cold weather. RnR Renewables designs and installs ground source systems for homes and developments with the space for a ground loop or borehole, nationwide.

How a ground source heat pump works

A buried loop of pipe circulates a fluid that absorbs low-grade heat from the ground. The heat pump concentrates that heat to a useful temperature and delivers it to your radiators, underfloor heating and hot water cylinder. For every unit of electricity the pump uses, it moves several units of heat into your home — which is why a correctly designed system is so efficient.

Horizontal loop or borehole?

Where there is garden space, a horizontal ground loop laid in trenches is usually the most cost-effective collector. Where space is limited, one or more vertical boreholes can be drilled instead, taking up very little ground area. We assess ground conditions and available space at survey and recommend the right approach for your property.

Why choose ground source?

  • High seasonal efficiency thanks to stable ground temperatures
  • Low-carbon heating and hot water with no on-site combustion or flue
  • Long collector life and quiet operation
  • Works well with underfloor heating and correctly sized radiators

Is ground source right for your property?

GSHP suits homes with enough outdoor space (or the ability to drill a borehole), reasonable insulation, and a heating system that can run at lower flow temperatures. It is often a strong fit for rural and off-gas-grid properties. At survey we carry out a heat-loss assessment and tell you whether ground source, air source or another option makes the most sense for you.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

The Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) supports ground source heat pumps with a grant of currently up to £7,500, subject to Ofgem eligibility rules and a property survey. It reduces the cost of installation — it is not a “free” system and not “fully funded”. See our Boiler Upgrade Scheme page for what’s involved and how we handle the paperwork.

What’s included

Frequently asked questions

Does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme cover ground source?

Yes — the BUS grant supports ground source heat pumps, currently up to £7,500, subject to Ofgem eligibility and a property survey.

How much space do I need?

Either a horizontal loop across garden area, or vertical boreholes where space is tight. We confirm what your property needs at survey.

Is ground source more efficient than air source?

Ground source typically achieves higher seasonal efficiency thanks to stable ground temperatures, at a higher installation cost. We compare both options honestly for your property.

How disruptive are the groundworks?

Loop or borehole work is the most involved part of the install. We plan it with you, keep disruption to a minimum and reinstate the ground afterwards.

Will my radiators need changing?

Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, so some radiators may need upsizing. We calculate this at survey — see our radiators and heating upgrades page.

What maintenance does a GSHP need?

Very little — an annual check keeps it running efficiently. The ground array itself is essentially maintenance-free for decades.
